Ireland is one of the top countries in EU in recycling (42%) and has met all recycling targets to date and is on track to meet the 2020 targets. However, meeting 2025 EU target of 55% in just 5 years brings a big challenge.

EPA Report found that the 3-bin kerbside household collection system is somewhat effective in Ireland but could be a lot more effective if the majority of householders made a greater effort to segregate their wastes at home.

Average Irish Recycling Bin contains 26.3% of non- recyclable material and an Average Irish Food Waste Bin contains 8.25% of non-biodegradable material.

What is even more alarming is that Average Irish General Waste Bin contains 35% of recyclable material.

Commercial sector is even more alarming where commercial MDR bins contained 40% non-target materials and 73% of the materials in the commercial residual waste bin should not be there, as they should be recycled.
